Cookie policy
What we store in your browser, why, for how long, and how to change your mind at any time.
1. What cookies are
A cookie is a small text file a website asks your browser to store. Related technologies — local storage, session storage — do a similar job without sending data back with every request. This policy covers all of them. Cookies can be "first-party" (set by this site) or "third-party" (set by another domain whose content appears on a page). They can also be "session" cookies, deleted when you close the browser, or "persistent" cookies that survive until they expire or you delete them.
2. How we ask for consent
On your first visit a banner appears at the bottom of the screen with three choices: Accept All, Reject Non-Essential and Preferences, where you can allow analytics and functional categories independently. Nothing outside the essential category is set until you choose. Your decision is stored in your browser's local storage so the banner does not reappear on every page. Clearing site data for this domain will bring the banner back, which is also the simplest way to change your answer.
3. The cookies and storage entries we use
| Name | Category | Provider | Purpose | Lifespan |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ssj-cookie-consent-v1 | Essential | First party (local storage) | Records your consent choice and per-category selections so the banner is not shown again | Until you clear site data |
| ssj-session | Essential | First party | Maintains a secure session and protects the contact form against cross-site request forgery | Session |
| __host-rate-limit | Essential | First party / hosting provider | Abuse and spam rate limiting on form submissions | Up to 24 hours |
| ssj-analytics-id | Analytics | Analytics processor | Distinguishes repeat page views to produce aggregated statistics on which guides are read | Up to 13 months |
| ssj-analytics-session | Analytics | Analytics processor | Groups page views into a single visit for aggregated reporting | 30 minutes of inactivity |
| ssj-units | Functional | First party | Remembers whether you prefer metric or imperial measurements in the guides | 6 months |
| ssj-motion | Functional | First party | Stores a reduced-motion preference set on this site | 6 months |
We do not use advertising, retargeting or social media tracking cookies, and we do not permit third parties to set profiling cookies through this site. Decorative images are requested from a third-party placeholder image service; that request reveals your IP address and user agent to the service in order to deliver the image, even though it does not set a cookie of ours.
4. If you reject non-essential cookies
The site works normally. Essential entries continue because they are strictly necessary to deliver the pages you asked for and to keep the form secure — these do not require consent under the UK Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations or the EU ePrivacy Directive. You will lose only the conveniences: we will not remember your unit preference, and your visits will not appear in our aggregated statistics.
5. Managing cookies in your browser
Every major browser lets you block or delete cookies, either for all sites or for this one. Blocking all cookies will break many websites, so per-site settings are usually the better option. Current instructions from the vendors:
- Google Chrome — clear, allow and manage cookies
- Mozilla Firefox — clear cookies and site data
- Apple Safari — manage cookies and website data
- Microsoft Edge — delete cookies
Most browsers also offer a private or incognito window, which discards cookies when the window closes, and a "do not track" or global privacy control signal. Where we receive a Global Privacy Control signal we treat it as an opt-out of non-essential categories. General background on cookie management is available at allaboutcookies.org.
6. Withdrawing consent on this site
To change your choice, clear site data for storyshelvesjumble.courses in your browser settings and reload any page; the banner will reappear and you can choose again. You can also email [email protected] and we will confirm what would be stored under each option.
7. Changes to this policy
If we add, remove or change a cookie we will update the table above and the "last updated" date. Where a change introduces a new non-essential purpose, we will ask for consent again.
8. Contact
Questions about cookies, or a request under data protection law, should go to [email protected], or by post to Storyshelvesjumble Learning Ltd, Unit 4, 27 Kelvin Row, Manchester, M1 5QT, United Kingdom. See also our privacy policy.
